1. Establish the Goal of Your Blog

The first step is to establish what your blog is going to be about. What are the goals of your blog? We all have ideas of things we want to write about to help our audience but what is the “why” of your blog. Are you trying to educate folks on what your business offers? Are you trying to build your social proof? Is there something your business does better than anyone? Is this part of your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Strategy? Are you writing for a hobby or business? There is a difference between these two because when you are writing for business, then certain components need to be addressed.

2. Consider Solving Your Clients Pain Points

If there is one thing that we are looking for are solutions to our problems. Be the information center you can clients can go to. It’s your business and only you know what it’s capable of doing for someone. Talk about it! Every minor pain point in your client’s life is a blog or two. Think about every problem you solve for a client daily and you have more than two or three blogs! All you need to do is write it down!

Show it off with data! We use two tools to track everything we do for our clients. We use Sprout Social to track the content and hashtags and Databox to show further analytics of each blog and/or campaign. Discuss the results of a marketing campaign you just completed and share your results. Whether it was successful or not surely you learned something you can share with others so that eventually you are seeing as the expert in that area. Did your business have a change in direction? Did you rebrand? Share why!

3. What’s in It For Me?

We are all in it to win it, but you have to always put your client’s needs and think a bit selfishly on their behalf. We are all looking for answers so share those answers otherwise why should anyone want to come and read your blog out of the millions of blogs and experts that are cluttering up social? How is your content helping them? What problems of theirs is it solving? Again, “what is in it for me?”

4. Backlinks to Noted Information

Every successful blog has standards. Nowadays a short blog doesn’t cut it. You need to have at least 10 outbound links to sources for SEO purposes and 1,000 words at a minimum before Google even considers your content for indexing in search engines. Crappy content doesn’t cut it! Don’t believe me? Check out this awesome post by Neil Patel, who is an expert on SEO.

This may sound like a no-brainer but how can your product or service solve their problems?  If you are writing a blog that is always talking about you, how is that helping a business owners’ problems? Yes, you’re right. It’s not solving anything. This is one thing blogging is NOT about YOU. But it is about how you can help a business succeed!
